Two Poems from our Nature Poetry Collection

Couridjah

Author: Meriki Fraser \ parkinson

Poem:
Couridjah

Along the ‘Loop Line’ track, sit’s Couridjah not far.
A tiny town, if that; long farmed by those at heart.

The roadside’s yellow shine, makes easy walks so lazy.
With flooded colour wild, from mass of dainty daisy.

And the ‘Rehling Orchid’, had a tall Pine forest.
All the floor was littered, mushrooms’, red, white spotted.

Faeries there did dwell I saw, blinking ‘twix the trees.
‘Neath the fallen, evergreen floor, playing tricks with ease.

Magical of Nut trees, from which I pluck my wand.
Shaping just for my please, all the trees, we had a bond.

Magnolia graced the front, Lemon, Lime, in my backyard.
Bush Eucalypt; firewood hunts, clothesline among blossom art.

More varieties of bugs, then you’d care, see, or scratch.
Rain wash out all the plugs, silicon holes, just re-thatched!

How I miss my Couridjah, inland, ancient, welcome home.
Place of magic female art, home to wondrous Faerie folk.

HAMPTON BEACH

Author: Lee Emmett

Poem: HAMPTON BEACH

when is salt delicious?
on a really hot day
when you slowly saunter
into the bay

flop down, head first
plop! into water …
on warm sand, son
and beautiful daughter

feeble breast stroke
turn over onto back
forget about time
completely lose track

salt licks wounds physical
and emotional, and other
problems disappear
under saltwater cover

waves gently break
over face and shoulder
venture out further
get a bit bolder

Port Phillip Bay
clean and healthy
enjoyed by all comers
not just super-wealthy

over three million
people live beside
Melbournians play
low and high tide

surf-kite lifts
young man in air
modern Icarus
tanned, blond hair

much further out
white-sailed yacht
dips up and down
and tacks a lot

young boy in hat
with bucket and spade
imagines sand palace
in structure he’s made
