Two Poems from our Nature Poetry Collection

MURRAY RIVER EVENING

Author: Lee Emmett

Poem:
MURRAY RIVER EVENING

  as Christmas present
daughter arranges holiday
couple of nights at Mildura
Echuca, then Inverloch bay

nice to spend some time
together with no hurry
just talking and relaxing
no thoughts of work or worry

daughter's been mentoring
young woman from region here
tonight had dinner, tomorrow
shop, and night-meal prepare

summer water restrictions
for garden: only able to hose
one hour once weekly, since
down water-level goes

many holiday-makers
travel to premier town
house-boats, swim and fish
recreation till sundown

caravans and cabins near
wide beach of coarse sand
children swim along edge
parents give them a hand

stroll along Murray's bank
under river gums at evening
beautiful sunset country
stressful heat is leaving

MALLEE MIDNIGHT SKY

Author: Lee Emmett

Poem: MALLEE MIDNIGHT SKY

five minutes past midnight
first day of new year over
went out to view night sky
constellations to discover

Southern Cross our emblem
sitting above horizon
orange planet Mercury
almost above is rising

Orions' belt predominant
and seven sisters Pleiades
Aldebaran brightly glows
proud Taurus bull parades

sudden silver shooting star
streaks and fades to nought
meteoric flame comes to fame
just as quickly is put out

living on Melbourne's fringe
among canopy of tall trees
midnight jewels merely glimpse
in mallee horizons are free

here, boundless Milky War appears
huge galaxies and giant nebula
even in bright town of Mildura
star-gazing is spectacular
