Two Poems from our Nature Poetry Collection

MERRICKS CREEK, BALNARRING

Author: Lee Emmett

Poem:
MERRICKS CREEK, BALNARRING

  stood beside creek
saw shooting star
heard brushy-tail possum
growl from tree far

turbulence heard
crashing of waves
regular motion
since time of caves

share with forefathers
unchanging nature
sea, sand and stars
common feature

contrasting stillness
of water estuarine
not even ripple
disturbs peace divine

water at centre
reflects star-shine
bright silver jewels on
night-velvet sublime

SUNSET BALNARRING

Author: Lee Emmett

Poem: SUNSET BALNARRING

straight after dinner
walk through dunes
covered in ti-tree
some shrubs in bloom

take bush track
on to wide beach
walk away from sun
nearly Somers reach

golden orb falling
imperceptibly
through soft bed of clouds
behind hill beyond sea

wave-break of violet
intricate like lace
crimples and crashes
gentle swirl makes

colours of sunset
reflect on wet sand
divine palette wielded
by heavenly hand

couple and child
take poodles for walk
throw ball and sticks
as they laugh and talk

early each morning
trainers race horses
along unspoiled shore
practice for courses

rubber boats moored
hundred metres off
bob up and down
in tides weak or rough

near old jetty
happy man alone
may catch whiting
unless his luck’s gone
