Author: Lee Emmett

Poem:
ST KILDA TOURIST PRECINCT SKETCH

black swans on Albert Park Lake
plane trees in Fitzroy Street
alfresco cafes, fellow with tattoo on muscly arm
barefoot young woman backpacker
double-length tram
palm tree at station on Canterbury Road
the George Hotel flaky paint

Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron
next to war memorial
tall palm on foreshore
sultry, sulky morning
see city of Melbourne beyond pier
great fig tree, Aboriginal meeting place
on corner of Marine Parade
sign indicating Esplanade
and Acland Street
home of some of the city’s finest cakes

St Kilda’s Sea Baths with
Turkish architectural influence
ice-creams main food advertised
plenty of construction going on
looks like giant sand-castles
nearby Luna Park’s big dipper
Donovan’s high class restaurant
on Jacka Boulevard

lighthouse on rocky outcrop
St Kilda Marina is chock a block with vessels
kite board hire truck
Elwood Park, near estuarine drain
hoop pines, more palms
sails cover playground near Ormond Esplanade
racing yachts on Port Phillip Bay

SPIRITS OF BUSH

Author: Lee Emmett

Poem: SPIRITS OF BUSH

in place by self let imagination run free
make patterns out of natural things
viscous swirls of cream emerge from clouds
giant elephant found on side of mountain
its hide coarse as granite
maybe considered a bit of a sad sack
but will get in first

admit mind is not always operating in smooth sequences
rather, jumping here and there like jack rabbit
bobbing from one idea to next
takes considerable self-discipline for it to stop
long enough to survey peaceful landscape
it could choose to rest upon
and meditate for a while

so here, away with the spirits of the bush, hiding in mulga
hearing echoes from tribes who inhabit rocks
creeks and scrambling prickly scrub
stretching between isolated taller trees
waiting for something to appear
perhaps the very spirit of the place itself

bright pulse grows stronger
as sun rages towards noon
mirage hovers on horizon
and think can make out figure coming towards
and goanna, at rest for indefinite time
stirs on the grey bark of tree, and stares
distracts from reverie
and when look again towards approaching person
nothing is to be seen
